More D stats to consider:

Right off the bat, guess how many possessions BYU has had that start in the opponent side of the field during meaningful game time?  Meaningful meaning not an onside to end a game.    4.   4 in 7 games.  With 2 v Utah, 1 v. ASU  and 1 v. USF.  4 short fields all year.  BYU has scored  17 pts on those.  7 v. ASU, 3 v Utah and 7 v. USF.

So the defense is putting the onus on the O to have long drives to get points.  As further proof, let go game by game with field position:

Arizona: Starting field position average is the BYU 19 yard line in 10 possessions.  Average TD scoring drive is 77 yards with 3 TDs.

Utah: Average field position is the BYU 31 with 10 possessions.  THis includes 2 in Utah territory.  Average TD drive length is 78 yards with 3 TDs. 3 pts off TOs.

ASU: Average field position is the BYU 28. This includes 1 possession starting on the ASU 12.  Average TD drive is 61.5 yards with 4 TDs.  21 pts off TOs that game. 1 short field TD.  Special teams got that one, and the O fumble got 7 others from Allgeier. D TOs got 7 pts.

USF: Average field position is the BYU 34.  Average TD drive length is 65 yards with 5 TDs. 7 pts off TOs.

USU: Average field position is the BYU 31. Average TD drive is 74 yards with 4 TDs. 7 pts off TOs.

BSU: Average starting field position is the BYU 24. AVerage TD drive length is 77 yards with 2 TDs.  7 pts off TOs.

Baylor: Average field position is the BYU 24.  Average TD drive length is 75 yards with 3 TDs. All 75 yard drives.

So the trends are that BYU has to have long drives to get TDs because they rarely get a short field.  Not from TOs, and not from punts.   And in most games our TD drives are really long. Even the ASU game, which had a 12-yard TD drive.  Every FG drive is long as well, except for the Utah game where a short field got 3 pts.   No TDs by the defense.

The offense is being asked to be really efficient and to have long drives to score because the D can't get off the field quickly.   I didn't count 3 and out drives, but they are few. Even 5 and outs are few.  The D struggles to get off the field, does not help with field position very often.  So they mostly limit points, but expect the O to have long drives to scores points as well so the onus is put on the O to win games with long scoring drives.    The D needs more disruptive plays and to give more short fields to help win games.  4 all year is pretty awful.
