Your example makes it clear that there are cultural and behavioral differences
Most of the failure-to-launch individuals and families we're talking about aren't advancing in the ways you suggested (and most people on CB are probably not Asian-American; we're approaching this issue with a very different set of social and cultural expectations). I think most people here don't have issues helping children that need help as long as they have a clear direction and purpose - but we do have concerns about a social trend toward reduced responsibility and an acceptable period of extended adolescence that stretches into the late 20s and early 30s.

I think we can both agree that there are significant differences between the economy facing millennials today and the booming post-war and 80s-90s economies that previous generations enjoyed (although the stagflation in the 70s was brutal, and shouldn't be discounted). But when faced with headwinds like this, you'd hope to see extra focus and determination; the concern that we're discussing is that instead of extra resolve, we're often seeing an abdication of responsibility wherever possible.

Living in Mom & Dad's basement is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.
