I love the 5-out motion offense and have taught it to a boys team as young as 5th grade and a girls 7th grade team.
Neither teams were rec teams though and I had them for multiple seasons.

It might be asking too much for the time and resources you have available to you.

CDV’s post above talking about fundamentals is really good advice.

You have to be good at the simple things first before you can worry about the rest. The small details are so important. The ability to dribble, the ability to make a pass (to the open teammate), knock down a free throw, make an open layup…if your team can keep the routine plays routine you can win a lot of games.

A lot of games are lost in the small details.

I loved drills. Lots of them.

I loved 1 on 1 with my teams, exactly how CDV explained it. That drill teaches so much.

Also, kids need conditioning. Don’t make them run though just to run. Use you time efficiently making them run within game like drills.

Lastly, the best practices are planned out in advance. I always had a schedule that I would write down. Down to the minute. It even included timed drink breaks.

Sixth graders pay the best attention when they are busy in a drill. Idle time standing around you will lose them. Planned practices help avoid idle time.
