I know bunting isn't easy. You have to practice to be a good punter. But it's definitely a skill that can be improved to a position of usability with practice.
So given that, when a guy who has a defensive shift put on when he comes up to bat, why would he not simply bunt away from the shift? I mean I get Freddie Freeman doesn't really want to bunt regularly. But at the end of the day, if you're on base you're on base. Seems like if you bunt once or twice when they put the shift on, pretty quickly they'll realize it you can beat the shift and stop.
Cause realistically the shift is designed to take away a single. It's not going to do much to reduce an XBH. So the entire purpose of it is to take away a single in a bun has the same effect, why would you not practice that enough to do it reliably to beat a shift every time?
