A car never have to sit at a red light when no other cars are around, like in the middle of the night.

On a grander scale, the system should be able to adjust, on the fly, when traffic backs up. It would be nice if traffic systems could partner with apps like Maps, Waze, Google Maps, Garmin, to better suggest alternate routes for the greater good. If the freeway is backed up, they’ll all suggest the same alternate route, which then gets backed up. Why not coordinate the route recommendations across a few different routes, looking at the flow of traffic as a whole, to find the most efficient drive for everyone, overall.
