Having had MP3 players for years before the iPod
I pretty much ridiculed the thing. It was literally 10x the price of the units my family had.
I severely underestimated the need for the iPod companion......itunes as well as a fine tuned interface. The ease of use of the wheel on the iPod skyrocketed it.
Steve Jobs was amazing....
