Other than a couple of our very most terrible years, we have two or three blowout wins every single year, even when our team overall is marginal. Our good teams have many blowout wins each year. One frustration with this team is we make every game close, even when playing crappy teams like Arizona or South Florida. Sure, I'm pretty happy with a 6-2 record, and I'd for sure rather win close than lose, of course. But, I don't think BYU has ever had a team win six games and not have any of them be blowouts (over 2 TDs).
It's true we've never had as difficult of an opening stretch--but Arizona, South Florida, and Boise St are all bad teams--and we lost to Boise St. One or two of those at least should have been blowouts, but we just can't get separation--even against bad teams. If we're good enough to beat a decent Utah, Arizona St, Wash St, Utah St, we should be good enough to blow out some of these lesser teams.
We've had stretches where defense has played pretty decent, and stretches where the offense has played pretty decent, but not enough stretches where they both played well at the same time. It would be nice if scheming and execution could come together at some point to make that happen.
