I remember way back at the beginning of the tech boom, AMZN was only selling books and people said they would never be profitable because they hadn't turned a profit before Barnes and Noble built out their website. When B&N had built theirs, plenty of people said AMZN was done.
But, obviously, AMZN wasn't interested in being just a bookseller. So the comparisons to B&N were not as clean as people originally thought.
Some people argue the same thing for TSLA. They may have started with cars, but their overall game is much more than cars. So, maybe a straight comparison to other car makers isn't going to be as clean as some people think. I know my neighbor just dropped a pretty big chunk of change on a TSLA battery to store solar energy. But, he doesn't have any TSLA cars.
