Jaren Hall Appreciation Post
This is not meant to be a Jaren / Baylor QB1 post, but I'm sure invariably it will turn into one. I've seen a bunch of criticism on here about Jaren that just seems absolutely wild to me.
1) Jaren is not an accurate passer:
His completion percentage is 64%, and the games that most have complained about him have been 70% and 75%.
His QBR, a standard measure of QB performance is 79.5, which currently ranks 11th in the country.
2) Jaren isn't good in the red zone:
BYU's red zone scoring offense is currently ranked 15th in the country. If Jaren was no good in the red zone, this wouldn't be possible.
3) Jaren stats are only good because of his receivers
BYU receivers are awesome, no question. A stable of beasts. But its unlikely that the whole core plays in the NFL. I never heard someone downgrade Steve Young because he threw the ball to Jerry Rice. It's just a really weird critique.
4) Jaren throws a bad deep ball
He had one game where he under threw some passes. IMO, one would have been a touchdown, and the other would have gotten us another 10 yards post catch, but not for a TD. You are welcome to disagree. But I would much rather a QB under throw long passes occasionally than over throw them, which generally is what happens. When you have good receivers and they are open, you want to make sure you don't over throw first. Watch an NFL game you will also see QBs that have under throws...even from the greats.
Now here are a few additional reasons I love Jaren:
1) He is an amazing runner. He ran for 90+ yards against Utah, and he scored a long run against Baylor. He is an elite QB runner.
2) He is 4-0 against the Pac-12...how awesome is that!
3) He BEAT Utah!!! He threw for 3 TDS, and ran for 90+ in that game. He was so clutch! How many amazing QBs have we had that couldn't get that W?!
Based on the above, I can't fathom anyone calling for his benching. I get that people love Baylor, he is also an amazing QB. Maybe he is even better. But if you think he is better, you are basically saying you think he is Zach Wilson 2020 level. That's unrealistic.
If you want to make a case for Baylor, fine. He is great. But when you do so, let's not bash a QB that is doing a fantastic job. Jaren is awesome, and I think we should rally around him. In my mind, he is already a BYU legend for stopping the streak alone!

Yes the offense looks different when you are playing USF and Utah St. Two of the worst defenses in the entire country.
