I always play, rarely do the range unless I need to fix something

usually, 4-5 times a year when I get out of sync with my tempo. I also always play against my player partners...we do handicap adjusted stroke or match play. I think that is good advice, you tend to focus way more as well.

Range is where you learn to swing. Course is where you learn to play. You want to be a player, it's about the course.
