I disagree with this part:
"Readers can get a lot more at a much lower rate elsewhere."
I haven't seen anywhere else offering anything like them. And the rate is reasonable. If the Athletic goes down, I think decent sports journalism will die with it. Every other outlet has turned to lists and meme-y type stuff, posting twitter links, etc. No one else really writes anymore.
