Amidst all the noise about keto versus vegan, I don't think this
perspective gets enough focus.

He (Dr. Ted Naiman) basically argues for a protein centered approach where you aim to daily consume about 1 gram protein per pound of ideal body weight (for males, he estimates ideal body weight in pounds as 110 + 5 for every inch of height above 5 feet - so a 6' tall male would have an ideal body weight of 170 pounds).

He looks at calories in terms of protein (P) versus energy (E) (carbs & fat) and co-authored a book ("The P:E Diet") discussing this perspective. Basically, he believes that the ratio of protein to the combination of carbs + fat in the diet is much more important than the ratio of carbs to fat in the diet (although for people trying to lose weight, he generally advocates for trying to consume no more than about 100 grams of net carbs per day).

He claims that the modern human diet has become protein diluted (as well as fiber and mineral diluted) as compared to ancestral diets and that our highly refined carb, highly refined fat, hyper palatable processed foods are largely driving the obesity epidemic because, in addition to being addictive, they're less satiating per calorie than ancestral diets, which contained a higher percentage of protein, fiber, and minerals.

In addition, he subscribes to the concept of high intensity, shorter duration resistance training (basically, relatively intense but short workouts).

Some other interesting perspectives on this subject (advocating for a protein centered approach in combination with resistance exercise) include those of Dr. Donald Layman, Dr. Stuart Phillips, and Dr. Gabrielle Lyon.
