The roughing the passer penalty was the correct call on the reversed pick.
Rewatching the play that Jaren threw a pick but it was called back for roughing the passer and the call was textbook. You might love or hate the rule but 99 left his feet and jumped toward Hall leading with the head and making initial contact with Hall's facemask. Number 99 did not lower his chin, therefore, not hitting with the crown of the helmet, which would have been considered a targeting call. The rules are very clear that contact with the head or neck area of the QB, while he is not a runner, is prohibited. This was direct contact with the face mask as the first point of contact with the head and then a shove after. I don't think 99 was late or malicious, but according to the rules launching at the head of the QB and making contact is a penalty. Watching it live, I thought it was a super weak call and that we got amazingly lucky. After further review, the call was correct and not that hard to make. I still think it was lucky because 1, it reversed a pick, and 2. It was pac-12 refs that made the call, which is lucky in itself.
