It isn't all about money, or is it
Been watching with interest as these coaches who are getting paid big money, leave their current schools, and head to new and supposedly greener pastures. I had to ask, are there people who would not leave for the money, hoping we have one, but obviously, if he is getting offers, we aren't being made aware. Then I was reminded of 1985, I had been in my business for 2 years, I was finally starting to make real money, when Nike came a knocking. While I was flattered, I did not want to quit on the little companies I had helped get on the map in my region, and in spite of an immediate tripling of my income, and the prestige of working for the biggest company in my industry, I stayed put. ( everyone thought I was crazy ) Two years later I would make a big move, but do it on my terms, then ten years later would make a life changing move, that changed the economics of my life, in ways I could never have imagined, or even realized with Nike. The brand was never as prestigious, but they recognized my value, and allowed me to really make some money for a long time. Sure, other brands, that were bigger and sexier came along during those 17 years I was with that brand, but I was committed. Then one day, our CEO left, and I was being paid a level that was higher than anyone else in the company. The next day, I was out. I negotiated a settlement, and then two months later my largest customer declared bankruptcy. I had gotten a settlement, that was rock solid, and had I remained employed, I would have gotten hit for millions of dollars of losses incurred from this bankruptcy. Why do I share this, it is like a coach, looking out at jobs, where he can't see around the corner. There is more safety in the smaller job, the income can wash over time, Nike would have never let me make what I made, even as big as they are. Here's to hoping that Coach Pope and Sitake, are both here for the long haul.
