Got it. I thought you were saying people were asking "how is this okay" because
of its depictions of Mormons and Mormonism. But clearly that isn't what they are questioning. It isn't the mocking of Joseph Smith, or the Book of Mormon that has people questioning whether the play is play...it is the alleged racism. From the first article:

"The play is set in a small village in Uganda, and herein lies the problem: The Ugandans are depicted as dumb, impoverished, superstitious, overly sexualized and childlike through clearly racist and denigrating tropes that feed into longstanding stereotypes of black people and Africa. Think of our current president when he called African nations the “s-hole” countries."

I have not seen the play. I knew the gist of what it was about, but was not aware that the Ugandans are depicted the way the article says they are. The other article you cited as well as the Josh Gad interview confirm that the problem isn't really the treatment of Mormons, although that is addressed, but that it is in the treatment and depictions of Africans that are problematic for the play. That is a different topic altogether.
