My thoughts on the year thus far and moving forward
First off. 10-2 and ranked #12 currently is a no brainer success. A win in the bowl game and it will be a top 10 finish. This has only happened 3 other times in the history of our program. 1984, 1996 and 1983. Last year we finished #11, and I believe the team was that good, but we definitely benefitted from it being a Covid year.

The offense this year was better than I thought they would be. Hall and Romney outperformed my expectations for them. The WR group, when not injured, is the best I have ever seen at BYU. Tyler Allgeier is one of the best RBs to ever come through the program and has a chance to be our best pro at that position. The OL which looked thin, played fantastically all year long despite some injuries. Pay, Barrington and Freeland are stars. Tukuafu was great, younger Barrington great for being a true freshman and Keim played well.

The defense was better than I thought for two games this year, the most important two games of the season. They played very well against Utah and forced turnovers against Arizona St. As I have expressed many times I do not like the base defense employed in the rest of the football games during the season. The effort against USC was gutsy as there were a lot of low star, inexperienced guys playing. Our defensive backfield looks great and hopefully Herron comes back next year. Our LBers struggled after Pili went down. Our defensive line was underwhelming as a whole which is kind of crazy as they dominated a good Utah offensive line (yes some of those guys are injured). We definitely need to improve on this side of the ball to consistently have these types of seasons.

Special Teams were also very good. Rehkow is an NFL punter in my opinion. Oldroyd lost his streak of consecutive makes, but has an NFL leg when healthy. Nyberg did a great job of catching the football on all punts including the short ones. The kickoff return team needs to learn how to waive their hand more often.

ARod and the offensive coaches deserve a big raise. They were that good. Sitake as has been said deserves a raise. He has fostered a program that has become a big family. He has connected with fans. Defensively I love what Jernaro Gilford is doing with guys who were generally not great recruits. I loved the Utah game plan as well as the Arizona St one.

Recruiting - I have been critical of BYU's recruiting under Sitake as statistically it is the worst in the history of our program. But I can appreciate a few things about it in hindsight. One is his ability to get solid guys come in as preferred walk-ons. Where would our program be without Allgeier, Wilgar, Milne last year and many others? I also recognize his ability to get some key transfers. Empey, Nacuas X2, Hoge, Robinson, Hayes...etc have been huge for the program. That being said, we need more talent, especially defensively in recruiting. I think help is on the way with a better class this year and hopefully continuing to excel moving forward.

On paper, BYU should be better in 2022 than it was in 2021. Why? I think we only lose a handful of impact guys in Allgeier, Empey, Pau'u, S. Nacua, Ah You and Leiataua. Some other guys could go which would hurt including Hall, P. Nacua, G. Romney (he wanted to go, but I think he needs to come back), Mandell, Freeland and I'm sure others I am forgetting. But at this point I expect those guys back. Some big time transfers and recruits are on the way with Suamataia, Fano, Moa and others to be named later. BYU needs to get on the recruiting trail and capitalize on this season.

Overall it has been a great year. I hope we can finish it off with a bowl win and a top 10 ranking. I hope it is just a taste of what is yet to come.
