Once a Kalani skeptic, I am now a true believer. This year has to go down as one of the best ever. Take a comparison between 1984 and 2021.

1984 schedule

BYU 20 Pitt 14 (Good win, but Pitt was supposed to be much better than they actually ended up being).
BYU 47 Baylor 13 (Baylor was a patsy back then.)
BYU 38 Tulsa 15 (Tulsa was another patsy on our schedule)
BYU 18 Hawaii 13 (Hawaii - okay, but always tough in the islands. Quality win)
BYU 52 Colorado State 9 (another patsy)
BYU 41 Wyoming 38 (They ended up 6-6 with blowout losses to Nebraska and Oregon State)
BYU 30 Air Force 25 (Air Force was okay that year. Ended up 8-4 with a bowl victory against Virginia Tech)
BYU 48 New Mexico 0 (Another patsy)
BYU 42 UTEP 9 (Another patsy)
BYU 34 SDSU 3 (Before SDSU got good)
BYU 24 Utah 14 (Utah was 5-5-1 that year)
BYU 38 Utah State 13 (The Aggies were terrible. 1-10)

Bowl Game - BYU 24 Michigan 17 (Michigan was 6-6 and barely bowl eligible)

2021 schedule

BYU 24 Arizona 16 (Arizona is one of the doormats of the PAC 12. P5 opponent)
BYU 26 Utah 17 (Probably our best win against a title contender in the PAC 12. Bowl eligible P5 opponent)
BYU 27 Arizona State 17 (Our second best win against a P5 bowl eligible team)
BYU 35 South Florida 27 (Not a great win. Door mat team in a G5 conference).
BYU 34 Utah State 20 (Quality win against a bowl eligible team)
Boise State 26 BYU 17 (Bad loss to a bowl eligible team)
Baylor 38 BYU 24 (Loss to a quality bowl eligible team)
BYU 21 Wazzu 19 (Quality win against a P5 bowl eligible team)
BYU 66 Virginia 49 (Win against a P5 bowl eligible team)
BYU 59 Idaho State 14
BYU 34 Georgia Southern 17
BYU 35 USC 31 (P5 almost bowl eligible team)

1984 - we played a total of 3 P5 teams (including Michigan) and beat them all.
2021 - we played a total of 7 P5 teams and beat six of them.

I would say that 1984 was a better year, but was it a better team? Lavell never had the kind of schedules that Kalani has had, and I say that in all due respect to the Legend.
