The NYTimes said it was "practically" zero and about the level of regular death/hospitalization risk from flu. But regular flu risk is not considered a pandemic. The risk is never zero, and it is truly a tragedy whenever someone is seriously sick or worse. So I am sorry your family is in that situation.
