Today I was chatting with a total stranger at the San Diego airport while we waited for bags. She said she referees…
Soccer as a hobby. So I mentioned that I watched a Soccer match on ESPN last night. She asked, “Which one?” I said it was the Women’s NCAA Championship? She said, “I was there. I was one of the officials at the Florida State / BYU game.”

I didn’t let her know I favored one of the teams, that I was just a soccer fan who found the game while channel surfing. I asked her which team she thought was the better team. She said she thought BYU had more opportunities to score and overall, was the better team, but that FSU had an advantage on the penalty kicks because they were able to watch BYU’s penalty kicks in the Santa Clara game. She said that was significant. They would have had to mix them up after the Santa Clara game that ended the same way.

Then she said that all referees are ‘on the comms’ the entire game and they would talk back and forth most of the game. Unfortunately though, they would always let the main referee make the calls himself for yellow or red cards himself (without interfering), but the boss told him it was a mistake. She said “All of us were really upset and disappointed in him. He made a huge mistake. It would have given BYU an extra player and a major advantage over FSU in the second half.” I found it refreshing that they all felt it should be done the right way, no matter what… with courage. There is a lot of pressure on the one referee. Too bad they couldn’t huddle and make the right call together.
