A few interesting takeaways
- 2012 was a stellar year for rookie QBs, with #3 Wilson, #5 RGIII, #7 Luck as 3 of the top 7 rookie QB seasons. Plus 2 more (Foles and Tannehill) in the top half of rookie QB seasons. Only other years that even have 3 in the top half are 2010 (#15 Tebow, #19 McCoy, #30 Bradford), 2011 (#8 Gabbert, #13 Newton, #25 Dalton) and 2019 (#11 Kyler, #16 Daniel Jones, #23 Drew Lock). Interesting that three of those years (2010-2012) run back to back to back
- 2021 is a BAD year for rookie QBs. Mac Jones is solid at #20, but otherwise this year has 4 of the bottom 12 (#51 Lawrence, #54 Mills, #55 Fields, #58 Wilson)
- 2010 was a bad year to be a Cardinals fan - Warner retired after 2009 and they spent the year bouncing back and forth between two rookies (#57 John Skelton and #62 Max Hall) who are among the worst on record. Derek Anderson got the other 9 starts.
- Just don't be a Jet. #46 Mark Sanchez, #37 Geno Smith, #32 Sam Darnold, #58 Zach Wilson. Only team that I see starting 4 rookie QBs in a 16 year span, and all 4 of them are below median for rookie QBs
- #59 Jared Goff is by FAR the worst rookie season that kept getting opportunities (probably due to his high draft position, which bodes well for Lawrence, Wilson, and Fields). The next lowest to get a meaningful second contract is #46 Mark Sanchez
- A few schools seems to bring QBs in looking initially OK, but then have them fail to pan out. USC (Leinart, Darnold, Kessler all started at least mediocre and then regressed; Sanchez was always bad but propped up by a good defense), Texas ( and Mizzou (Gabbert and Drew Lock) are good examples of this
- Guys with a rookie QBR over 70 all ended up studs. 60-70 were more likely to be successful than not (obvious caveats on Luck's retirement and RGIII injuries), but still basically a coin flip. 40-60 has a smattering of successful QBs and huge busts. Below 40 you've got Matt Stafford, Jared Goff and lots of ugliness
- Obvious small sample size caveat but don't start an Ohio St or BYU QB as a rookie; those 2 schools make up half the bottom 10. (Worth noting though that the Ohio St QBs were higher drafted and played more)
- Some of the best (Mahomes) and worst (Johnny Manziel, JaMarcus Russell) aren't included here since they started so few games
