If you win a football championship where there are 254 D1 teams, that's something major. If you win a men's volleyball or alpine skiing title, that's not the same. And not because football is inherently better, but because there's more competition.
If you finish top 5 in a sport you'll get solid points...even if there's only 12 teams competing in that sport. That's dumb and a top 5 finish in football or basketball should be worth more than a top 5 skiing finish.
So I'd weight sports by how many teams participate. Or at the very least by relative position within the sport. So if you finish #3/254 in football, you should get substantially more than finishing #3/12 in skiing (which has the effect of making football seem more important)
