Back in 2007-2012 Google allowed you to sign up for their Google Domains service, where you used Gmail to send/receive your email but your email address could be your own custom domain (e.g. user@myfamily.com), and this week Google announced that people who are using that free service have to convert to paid Google Workspace accounts to the tune of $6/month per user.
I'm an email guy, so I have setup lots of my extended family members with free accounts at our family domain name, and now suddenly I'm on the hook for ~$1000/year if we want to have continued access to the past 12 years of email (and they haven't really provided any good way to get that data out of Gmail if we wanted to switch email hosting services).
And I know that I'm complaining that somebody has decided to stop giving me free stuff, but it's really no different (and costs Google no more) than providing a free Gmail account, and it feels like a bait-and-switch, and now I'm scrambling to figure out how & where to move that data.
