Some observations from amazing seats at the game tonight
I was sitting 5 rows behind Coach Pope tonight, here were some unexpected things I observed:

1) It is clear that Coach Pope is getting a little frustrated with some of the players he thought would be further along by now. There were many sighs, eye rolls and even banging on tables around plays he (as a former big man) expects different results around. From my viewpoint I could sense the growing frustration. It’s a side I’ve never seen from him before.

2) There were multiple times in huddles where Coach Pope was speaking to the team and Coach Burgess would cut him off and say something. I don’t think this was an act of disrespect but shows how much Pope values the coaching abilities of his assistants. It was surprising to see though.

3) I’m not sure if they caught this on TV, but towards the end of the game there was a moment when Barcello was in full stride and got fouled right next to the ref who didn’t call it. He stopped, held the ball and just looked at the ref for like 3 seconds before passing it away. It was seriously one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a basketball game. Barcello’s body language just screamed, “Are you kidding me?”

4) Traore is playing years above where he should be. Dude has serious basketball smarts. 3 double/doubles in the last 7 games. Imagine how good he’s going to be as a senior. Part of why he’s seeing success is he plays so relaxed. You can see it when he sits on the bench. It’s like nothing phases him and he doesn’t have a care in the world. This is in stark contrast to a few other players that seem high strung and tense. You can just see it both off and on the court which is affecting their ability to reach their full potential. I’m trying to be nice by not naming specific players but you can make a pretty good guess as to whom I’m referencing.

5) Saw Tyler Haws and Jarem Jordan chatting it up in the tunnel in the first half of the game. Tyler Haws was awesome. I miss that guy.

It was a great game and this team continues to find a way to get it done. Congrats to Coach Pope for being the fastest BYU Coach to reach 60 wins. The program continues to look bright with him at the helm.
