Seeing Roger Reid on the TV broadcast
Saturday made me think how ironic it is that Chris Burgess is an important assistant to Mark Pope. You may recall that Burgess was a highly sought after recruit back in the 90s and it came down to BYU and Duke and Duke won the recruiting battle, much to the chagrin of BYU coach Roger Reid. Afterwards Roger made the famous/infamous remark that Chris had let down 9 million Mormons.

I had my own experience with Roger back in the 80s. I was umpiring a Little League tourny in Spanish Fork. One of the games pitted a Spanish Fork team coached by Roger Reid. That day his son Randy (future BYU point guard) was pitching and I guess Roger thought he should get every pitch within 6 inches of the corners. Roger's constant harping had the home crowd in a lather and by the 4th inning I read him the riot act. I ended up tossing him in the 6th.

He was an assistant coach to Frank Arnold at the time and later of course became head coach. I always supported him as head coach despite our encounter a decade earlier.
