I mentioned a couple of months ago a truly awful situation for the family of my
daughter-in-law. Her brother was in Chicago undergoing yet another surgery for brain cancer. They were hopeful of getting it all and figuring out what treatments would still work for him as radiation and chemo were no longer going to be viable options.

In the last two weeks it got much worse for him. The cancer came back strong. He had already lost sight in one eye due to the proximity of cancer in his brain to the optic nerve. He is currently undergoing another surgery (started at 9am today) in which the only goal is to remove his other eye and optic nerve which is cancer ridden and some of the cancer in the immediate area. He will be completely and permanently blind for the rest of his life. The doctors are not sure how long that may be. He saw his three-year-old son (also has cancer) and wife today for the last time.

Today's surgery is just to get him ready for another even riskier surgery on Wednesday. The doctors are up front that he may not survive this one. He is not sure he wants to live anyway but, he is determined to fight on for the sake of his son and wife.

I cannot even imagine going through something like that. It makes any "trials" I have had in my life seem like absolutely nothing.
