I was at BYU when Rex Lee died and was replaced by Pres. Bateman. I wasn't particularly a fan of his administration, especially with how the Rondo Fehlberg/Val Hale situation was handled. Abut 5 years later, when I was living in Michigan, our chapel had to be rebuilt because an arsonist had burned it down. Elder Bateman (he was no longer BYU President) was sent to dedicate the new building. I was particularly touched by the Spirit during his talk at the dedication, and I realized that he was a good man that was on the Lord's errand. He definitely made his mistakes at BYU, but the vilification of him 25+ years later is a bit too much.
