The doctor reading fee is not what’s driving this..

In the olden days more in my specialty owned the imaging facilities so kept a higher component. Then govt changed reimbursement to doctor owned practices, but paid more for the same test that was done or performed at the hospital. Made it harder to survive on own so then hospitals bought out the docs. Then the hospitals charged/negotiated even higher reimbursement. Bad cycle.

Funny thing is everyone bought into the notion that physician owned facilities led to rampant misuse (excessive testing etc) when in reality if you allowed us to compete in a true free market it would drastically lower costs. You can still monitor for abuse in other ways
