College football is the ultimate example of something succeeding despite itself
The morass of conference realignments, convoluted NCAA rules and enforcement and punishments, rampant cheating, endless escalation in salaries and revenues and disparities between the haves and have nots, the barriers to postseason access, etc etc etc
No one would put up with this kind of nonsense in almost any other context.
