Kitchen remodel.. what an ordeal (slight rant and bash on the cabinet company)
Last September, we ordered cabinets from a local (Lehi) cabinet company. We gave them their required 50% deposit and they said the cabinets would be ready in November. About a week later we got an email from our 'designer' saying our order was in 'processing' and things were moving forward..

Early November we got a text saying they would be ready in December..

Early December we got a text saying first week of January.

End of December we got a text saying that there was a mixup with another employee, he had messed up all of his orders, which caused problems with other orders, and now our cabinets wouldn't be ready until April 11th ('but this time for sure!')

If it was just the cabinets it would have been an inconvenience, but because we had to schedule contractors (demolition of old kitchen, electricians, plumbers, flooring guys.. and a general contractor) we had to scramble to find NEW people with each delay it was a royal pain (and it actually cost us money each time).

To make matters worse, we had ordered an in-wall double oven from Home Depot.. Home Depot will only hold your items for 30 days. They were nice and held onto our order longer but eventually they canceled our order and we had to scramble to find a new oven (supply chain issues.. price increases.. the updated version of the same oven ended up being $3k more).

In the middle of March we called and confirmed the cabinets would be ready April 11th... then had all of the contractors come in and destroy our old kitchen (i posted before how one of the flooring guys cut his thumb off).

The first week of April we get a text saying they are waiting on the wood for our island, and our date has been pushed out until April 25th. We understood we'd be without a kitchen for a few weeks... but that was just salt in the wound.

April 25th.. The cabinet company shows up to install the cabinets. Except we are missing a bunch of doors and drawer fronts. The stain job on the island looks like it was done by a 5-year-old (blotchy, uneven, thumbprints).

We then find out that the machine that makes our missing doors HAS BEEN BROKEN SINCE SEPTEMBER. And they have no date on when it will be working again. (they are glass doors with a wood pattern... I assume the machine is a CNC used to cut out the wood pattern). They told us that they upgraded the old machine, but cant get the new one working (again, since September... when we purchased the cabinets).

Anyway.. That was over a month ago. We still don't have our cabinet doors, we are still missing drawer fronts.. I've since noticed that they used 'B' grade plywood on a few (maybe all) of the panels (there are knots filled in with epoxy inside the cabinets and drawer boxes).

At first i thought the only good thing about this project was the countertops... until i noticed that our Island top is off-center... the top hangs over farther on one side than the other (i assume they cut the sink out in the wrong spot, and just slid it down to make it work).

The best explanation of all our troubles came from one of the guys installing the cabinets... He's expected to be a truck driver, an installer AND a finish carpenter but they only get paid $17 per hour. He could go work retail and make more money, and not have to deal with guys like me complaining about my kitchen.

If any of you happen to know the owners of Mountain States Kitchen... let them know we are not happy. (we've been told for the past few weeks he'd be calling us to 'make it right' 🙂 )
