As a head Baseball coach at 6A Davis County school here’s my 2 cents
First let’s all understand the open enrollment rule: up until this next school year Davis county did not have open enrollment for 9Th graders so you could only play at the school you live in the boundary of… This made recruiting very difficult because if you did recruit a player who played somewhere else his ninth grade year then when he came to your school he could only play sub varsity or below that rule has now changed going into next year but the kids still must get a variance Which is much more difficult as most of the schools are full so the kid Will most likely still end up playing for his boundary school up here in Davis County schools down in Utah County and South Salt Lake are not typically full so getting a variance to the open enrollment schools down there is quite easy yes and it has been for as long as we know it hence a lot of the angst towards Utah County schools and their open enrollment rules

Now to what I would call maybe the real issue up here in Davis County one would be the feeder programs I find the ones down in Utah County to be quite a bit more advanced and the level of baseball higher also single sport athletes who eat sleep and drink baseball seem to also be more readily available down in Utah county and south Salt Lake a good example I always give people when they ask me why I can’t compete all the time against Utah County schools is I usually have 2 to 3 kids at eat sleep and drink baseball while they have 8 to 9 that is a big difference when it comes to winning at the highest level as was mentioned in one of the posts above some schools are cutting players that would be very good ball players in my school a good example is the moody kid at Riverton that dude with bat third and start for me as a sophomore he already has a commit to the University of Utah and he doesn’t even get at bats so to say that Utah county and South Salt Lake teams have more talent to choose from would also be an indicator for their success I will end with this I was extremely happy to see Davis county open their enrollment up to ninth graders but it did not pay the dividends I was hoping for as all of our schools up here are pretty much full so we will continue to lag somewhat behind I am hoping that I can reverse a little bit of culture and take a page from Fremont and Farmington and play younger kids for three straight years in order to build a chance to make a run but due to the current rules and numbers retooling each year like Af or PG or Riverton or Bingham just doesn’t happen in Davis county
