When my son was attacked by a dog we took him the ER (Face bite) and they automatically called animal control.

We didn't have to report or anything but what happened. Animal control went out and evaluated the dog and it was ultimately put down. This was in Minnesota but I'm guessing other states have similar laws. It avoided conflicts between people as it had become a legal issue. Very swift.
