Let's imagine thing get really bad... Season starts 2-5 with losses to Baylor, Oregon, Utah St, Notre Dame and Arkansas (beating USF and Wyoming). Then in the second half we beat up on some weak teams, getting 3 wins over ECU, Liberty and Utah Tech while dropping another to Boise. Then we beat 3-9 Stanford in OT of the final game to get bowl eligible. That's a pretty gross season and we'd end up in the Frisco bowl with no room to complain.
But let's take a different scenario...one where we go 11-1 with just a loss to Notre Dame and the final CFP ranks look something like
1. Ohio St
2. Alabama
3. Clemson
4. USC
5. Georgia
6. Texas A&M
7. Notre Dame
8. BYU
9. Michigan
10. Oklahoma St
11. Wake Forest
12. Ole Miss
13. Oklahoma
14. Utah
....
22. Houston
In that case the NY6 tend are Ohio St, Bama, Clemson, USC (in the playoffs), Georgia, Oklahoma St (Sugar Bowl), Texas A&M, Wake Forest (Citrus Bowl), Michigan, Utah (Rose Bowl) and Notre Dame, Houston (Cotton Bowl)... and BYU ends up in the Frisco Bowl
Realistically, the end result is probably neither of those cases, but anything between those two extremes ends up with the same result
