Black and yellow makes sense if you’re going to simplify things. It’s the “beehive” state after all. The colors contrast nicely, the yellow has a pop to it, black is trendy and elegant in a simple way. I think the simplicity of the “J Note” complements the simple color scheme. And I don’t think there are any other NBA teams with those as their primary color scheme. I’m betting that when you see the yellow in person it won’t look quite so much like highlighter yellow.
Purple and White is also good for many of the same reasons. Even purple with yellow accents and white.
Where they whiffed is not on the colors IMO but in the font and size of the “Utah” and “Jazz” on the jerseys. Looks very amateurish and takes things past the point of elegant simplicity to where they look like they were designed by a 12 year old trying to make Utah look like the Brooklyn Nets because he has a Kevin Durant poster on his bedroom wall.
Give me a better font/word design, maybe one that plays off the “J Note” somehow like the old one did and I think it would have been a home run when combined with the new colors. It would have been simple, modernized, sleek but still harkened back to the “good old days”.
But as it stands it doesn’t look like the Utah Jazz.
