Also, regarding recruiting and 53 man roster, it's really tough to go through and historically identify everyone who makes the 53 at any point. I'd be almost certain to miss someone, which is why I normally simplify by just focusing on drafted players.
I'll have to take a look at the data, but I do know that higher rated players tend to be better in general in college and more likely to make the NFL. It's possibly that doesn't apply to BYU, but I don't think so.
One of the favorite arguments for the "stars don't matter crowd" is that more 3 star players are in the NFL than there are 5 star players...ignoring that there's substantially more recruits rated as 3 star. We've done a great job turning walk-ons and low star guys into NFL players.... But I bet the success rate on higher rated guys is better. The issue is that we have 33 walk-ons on the roster at a time and only maybe 5 top 500 guys (I prefer to use relative class rank over rating or stars)
