top of their lists for college or at least not any higher than any other school.
The official tour was OK. The guide was great and I think she did what she could, but the tour is heavily focused on academics (e.g. tutoring help, writing center, etc.) and pointing out buildings on campus. The one building we did go into, an art building, did not have any art up due to some remodeling, so we basically just walked in to where there was normally some art displayed and walked out.
I think it could be improved by actually taking prospective students into some of the buildings like the Marriott Center rather than just driving by the outside, especially during the summer when courses are not typically in progress.
On our own, after the tour we went to check out the computer science/animation building. We mainly looked at a few posters of movies that graduates had worked on and that was cool, but I heard some guy say something about going up to his office. I introduced my kids and he said he was a professor and asked if we wanted to look around, so he took us into the theater where students display their work and then took us into a computer room where students were working on animation projects. Both he and the students were very friendly and showed us some of the stuff they were working on. We didn't want to intrude too much as they were working on assignments, but they were very friendly and couldn't have been more accommodating. That side trip had WAY more of an effect on their feelings about BYU as they got a chance to see behind the scenes of a program they were really interested in.
