BYU needs marque P5 wins to earn a NY Bowl. BYU without ND only has
Baylor, Arkansas and Oregon as P5 games now that Stanford has bailed.
Boise state and S. Florida are nice games, but fair or not don't carry the same weight as P5 games. (isn't this one of the driving factors in moving from independent to B12?)
Hard to justify a NY bowl to a team with so few P5 games.
The only way is to go undefeated. Possible but not likely. Playing more P5 games gives you more opportunities for P5 wins. More p5 wins = better chance for NY bowl.

Notre Dame was either going to pay the buyout or do this. BYU took the better option. They were not coming to Provo.

BYU didn't "need" Notre Dame for 2022. They could have just as easily found someone else and the rest of the schedule

Of course. It's ridiculous what we did to get that extra game. Should have just forced them to pay us.
