Holmoe had absolutely no leverage.
His options were to take the buyout and walk, or take the game in Vegas and play.

He chose to take the game in Vegas. There are way more schools willing to jump at the chance to play ND than there are schools looking to jump to play BYU. Sure - BYU is in a good enough spot they can get games. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that for Notre Dame it was "take it or leave it, BYU. But we're playing a game in Vegas in October." BYU decided to take it - and I'm OK with that.

The initial contract that Notre Dame decided to buy out of is really the issue. And BYU was desperate enough for quality games at that point that they had no leverage then either - I suspect if the put the buy out too high, we never get those games.

While I would love to have been able to play Notre Dame in Provo again - I'd rather play them in South Bend (or Vegas) than not at all.
