There is only one reason to limit possessions:

You have a worse team than the team you're playing.

If you have a better team, you want more possessions because over time things will average out in your favor. If you have a worse team, you want less possessions because over time things will average out against you.

Limiting possessions is a good strategy for underdogs. It's like stalling in basketball back when there were no shot clocks.
