Historically lame teams had great seasons - Wake Forest, Rutgers, South Florida and Missouri all cracked the top 5 at one point that year. South Florida reached #2, and was actually poised to be #1, but they lost to Rutgers. West Virginia had the inside track to play in the BCS Championship game going into their Conference championship game but lost to Pittsburgh.

And that was also the year that Michigan lost to Appalachian State. It was pretty crazy.
