Lots of good answers but some seem to think Im an idiot for asking. Let me simplify. The movie implies the VERY best
pilots in all the US military come from Top Gun school.
By sheer numbers and implicit in the name AirForce, the AirForce should have the largest number of pilots and the most advanced weaponry. Even if the weaponry is the same, if those that truly want to be pilots choose AF over Navy and other branches of the military, logically the AF would have the best pilots. If AF puts 1000s of pilots in the air and the other branches 100s, again everything points to AF having the best pilots.
If admission into the system (AFA and Naval Academy) is similar and training and equipment are similar, it stands that AF would produce the best pilots (by sheer numbers alone) and conversely Navy would produce the best watermen.
