The Navy operated an air station in Adak, Alaska until 1997. It was a Cold War..
...installation that was part of the military base closures and downsizing during the Clinton era.

During the Cold War they were involved in a lot of operations against the USSR including supporting U2 spy flights over the Soviet Union, monitoring Soviet submarine ops in the north Pacific etc.

Now with longer range of newer aircraft the Air Force handles air space interdiction from Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage or Eielson AFB in Fairbanks.
