Here is my opinion.
Is the strategy changing?

No idea. Keep in mind that Oratt played at Ole Miss and Az St so he has seen what types of players succeed elsewhere.

Big12 is coming up and there's also the transfer portal. Is the roster solely comprised of LDS church members?

Not all of them are members. Keep in mind that baseball is only allowed 11.7 total scholarships. That means 3 kids per class can get full scholarships or you can divide them up and give partials to a bigger pool.

I know football/basketball adds non-members to their rosters. Looks like in the past there is a heavy pull from right within Utah, which is probably a direct result of recruiting budget constraints. I think it's limiting them from good players, especially those that might be from the east.

Utah is actually a net exporter of baseball talent. Kids are going to Other PAC-12 or BIG12 or SEC schools from the state so there is a good amount of talent In the state. For out of state kids, the best way to get noticed is go to a camp, or have a coach reach out to the staff on their behalf. BYU will have a coach at many of the National tournaments and kind find a way to see them. Out is state kids may only get a limited number of chances to be seen. Verified numbers that say 90+mph throwing and or 100+mph exit velocity are the types of things that stand out. But, they will need to see it for themself.

Also most Big12 teams get verbal commits from HS players early, but BYU only has one 2024 verbal commit.

Verbals change all the time once financing starts getting discussed. Again, most scholarships are partials. 25% from School A may be better than 50% from school B. It’s not like football and basketball where they are full scholarships.

BYU HS baseball camp is this week and Haring is in AZ recruiting. Hope Pratt and the rest of the staff kept their eyes open for possible studs that proactively went to them.

They will always have coaches at their hosted camps. A kid will need to stand out there (be the top 1-5 kids at the camp.
