The trade is such classic Danny Ainge. Trade away a fan favorite at peak value
for a haul, even though it has a brutal business first feel to it, while at the same time being 100% the right thing long term for the franchise.

It looks to me a lot like the Isaiah Thomas for Kyrie Irving trade in 2017. Thomas was putting up huge numbers in the postseason for Boston and was a huge overachieving fan favorite, attending his sister’s funeral in the middle of a playoff series and not missing a game to lead the team to a playoff series win. Thomas famously called for a “brinks truck” salary. That offseason Ainge traded him and was criticized for doing so, even called ruthless and heartless for doing that after IT gave his heart and soul on the court during the playoffs.
Fast Forward: I’m not aware if Thomas ever played another game in the NBA as it was revealed after the trade that IT had a hip injury. Ainge traded a broken IT into Kyrie Irving. Definitely sold high on that one, didn’t factor fan feelings into the trade, crushed a trade and put the franchise in a better spot.
My biggest fear is that Ainge has a total rebuild plan and that Donovan is also on the way out, and the Jazz will miss the playoffs for a couple seasons.
