I’ll just say this - for a long time the top of CFB has been separating from the rest. It was inevitable that an elite echelon would form that essentially became the “new D1” with everyone else being involved in a new “D1AA”. What I and hoped would happen is that upper echelon would involve somewhere around 64 schools, made of 4 geographic super conferences, with each conference champion a do advancing to a national championship playoff each year.

Unfortunately it looks like it will be 40-48 schools in the new D1, with no ability of anyone outside to participate in any sort of playoff against them. A newly formed B12 has the best shot at it, but who knows if they’ll be able to do it or not. I think BYU football will be a part of the new D1AA, and we will just have to see what that looks like when the dust settles.
