I don’t disagree that they have been free loading for a long time as a sub par program that didn’t deserve inclusion over BYU and many other programs.
However, regional rivalries and regional conferences with alumni cheering for their schools and passing down that passion through the generations are what made college football what it is today. The chance that your school, with that new coach or that special recruiting class, could breakthrough and take down your rival was part of the allure that captured our attention and fed our loyalty.
Whatever is going on now is just bad. Bad for eastern Washington, bad for Washington as a whole, bad for college football. I will have no interest in watching super conference matchups no matter how much they are force fed by the networks. I’m an alumnus of BYU first and from that loyalty is derived my interest in college athletics. Turning it into a quasi professional league won’t dampen my loyalty to BYU, but it will kill my interest in college football.
