In the '90s the SEC was known for devouring each other and preventing themselves
from competing for the national championship. Of course, that was back when simply being undefeated was given a lot more weight than SOS. It was pretty rare for the SEC to produce an undefeated team.

I think there is some truth to the blue bloods creating more losses for themselves (somebody has to lose), but these conferences are also getting so big numbers wise that we'll have to stop thinking about them the way we used to. The B10 and SEC are becoming something like the AFC and NFC in the pros. The playoffs will be expanded and there will be paths for multiple teams from each conference to make the playoffs. I think we'll see division winners getting invites and perhaps a post season conference tournament that is part of the playoffs.

I personally believe college football, though currently valued much greater than ever, is actually dying and won't survive this march to become a professional football league. Universities simply should not be in the business of being professional (some sort of minor league) team owners. But until death finally arrives everybody is scrambling to get as big a piece of the pie as they can, all while college football morphs into something unrecognizable from what it was.
