Don't discount the echo chamber & the ease of anonymous sources on social media
I remember a time when an agency would feed a tip to a media outlet. Media outlet would report the tip in a dressed up story. Then that same agency would use the very story they ignited as a source to validate their tip.
I can see these locals doing the same.
