I'm less worried about the D and more worried about QB depth...
...if you look at Tuiaki's defenses they seem to follow a pattern, above average to pretty good one year then the next year some degree of regression followed by a bounce back year, etc. Last year was definitely not good but it started out as a very good defense and then just wore down as the year progressed. It looks very good that we'll have everyone back healthy that missed chunks of time last year, Pili, Wilgar, Fauatea, Mahe, Ah You, Udo and Harper to name several. Factor in that along with the big improvements we've seen in the off-season with DL's hitting the weights and getting bigger/stronger and young guys returning with some significant game experience like Bywater, Nelson, Robinson, etc and there are enough signs to indicate that our defense will be improved this year.

I think also they've heard the complaints from fans and the media all off-season how they were the weak link last year and need to improve, they've heard it ad nauseam and it's been seared into their consciousness to the point that they have huge chips on their shoulders and are fixed in their minds with a determined resolution to NOT be the weak link this season.

As for QB depth, Baylor was a nice security blanket the past several seasons and we knew what to expect from him if the QB1 went down. He was good enough to win games. Jaren has had a tough time staying on the field and now we don't have that security blanket anymore. Maybe Conover will be just fine but we don't know that and concerns ratchet up a bit when we start reading off-season stuff about him dealing with anxiety (Tanner Mangum anyone?). The fortunes of the whole season could shift in an instant if we lose Jaren.
