After being in a league with Texas, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Baylor, etc., I can imagine it was a big let down to end up in the C-USA and American beginning in 1996. But even without the benefits of a major conference they've held their own.
Houston has the second best football history (after BYU) of the 4 new Big 12 teams with 15 AP Top 25 finishes, a Heisman Trophy winner (Andre Ware in 1989) and 4 major conference Championships (SWC) in 1976, 1978, 1979, and 1984.
One of their historic rivalries is with Texas Tech. They have a current series going, but Houston's move to the Big 12 will help solidify that. Texas Tech has won four straight, although Houston leads the all time series.
