Why you shouldn't be upset about preseason polls.

There's a lot of posts recently about BYU not being ranked preseason. The first post I read today was an entire post calling out someone giving a POTD to a post about a poll where BYU wasn't ranked. People are making a huge deal out of the preseason poll like they mean anything or are in any way accurate. Besides the usual 5 teams that are ranked every year, the rest of it is a complete crapshoot. It's like going into a test knowing 5 of the 25 answers and just using an ACDC sequence for the rest of the scantron while you hum Thunderstruck to yourself in the testing center.

Let's take a look at some data. Let's keep it simple and keep this to a pass/fail kind of scenario. I am not looking at rankings inside the top 25, but just if a team is there or not.

  • Out of the 25 teams ranked last year, only 10 of those were ranked at the end of the year.
  • Outside of the top 10, there were only 4 teams of the remaining 15 that ended in the top 25.

6 of those 15 teams weren't even receiving votes in the preseason poll. If the top 25 was a test, the AP would have scored a 44%.. a fat F. If the professor still curved it comparing the Coach's poll, it would still be a resounding fail. Take a moment, relax, and realize that the people who made that poll are the people who show up to class once every couple of weeks and wants to be an influencer on TikTok if this whole college thing doesn't work for them.
